- Beren, I was not Nom, “The Wise”, at that time. I was just Artafindё, loved by everybody, respected by no one. Except friend Melkor, of course. And friend Melkor missed no chance to sing me praises of how talented and clever I was and how others were blind if they did not notice that. - And you believed him? - Who would have tasted poison if it wasn’t sweet? I did, certainly. Besides, most of his words were true. The most dangerous lie of all, Beren, is truth. - I thought truth and lie were different things… Finrod’s face suddenly became harsh. He leant against the table and bent forward to Beren. - Beren, if I say that you’re an ignorant savage, a thug and a beggar, whose days are barren like ashes, would that be truth or lie? Even with a sudden slap in the face Finrod could hardly offend and amaze him more. - And you can be cruel, my lord, - Beren shook his head in shock. - No. I can be severe. There is difference between the executioner’s cruelty and the severity of a healer who cuts off the infected flesh. Sooner or later somebody will tell you the words I have told, not to show how easily the same things can prove to be truth or lie, but just to insult you. |

She had a dream. Long, painful and frightening, like a November night. She dreamt of eyes. Light-grey eyes with a tint of blue, clear and intent – they gazed into her, as if touching her soul with steel fingers. And her soul dashed in fear against the vaults of mind, threatening to shatter the beams and to break loose into the cold spaces of lethal insanity. She tried to free herself – but couldn’t. She listened to her body and the body, tightened with ropes, replied with pain. It wasn’t her body. She wasn’t herself. She could feel the presence of others near, but it was very vague because the Eyes held her constantly. Besides them nothing could exist in her small world. Un-She was sinking into horror. Under her feet the ice grave bared its fangs, the broken snow crust calved, the walls of ice flied by and her stark fingers, desperately trying to find support, slid down. Once this has really happened to Un-She. Once Un-She has been stuck between ice and stone, like a wedge in a slot. Un-She was going… a groan, almost a wail, burst out with a frosty cloud of breath… was going to stay in this crack FOREVER! The eyes promised release. Firm and steady support. Only one little thing was required – to agree. To open, to allow to be rescued from despair. Such a little thing… And Un-She turned to Her, reached out to Her with all her essence. This appeal was clear, as if someone called her name aloud: “Tinuviel!” She knew that she must not accept help from This. She must not. By no means. And she knew that the Eyes don’t lie: they can crush, destroy, break down; they can indeed. But death was the only way out… For Beren. Clearly, so clearly, as if some smoke screen has lifted, she saw that Un-She is Beren. He called for her. And what could she answer? “Hold on”? Hold on, she said. Do not let him inside you, for death which he is treatening you with, is the Gift of the One. And what he is offering is worse than death. It hurt her to say this; she cried. This was her own pain, but his came after. From afar but very distinct, and she screamed, though he kept silent. And Un-She said with his voice: “So why are you sitting, you bastard? Exhausted of torturing me?” Luthien screamed and woke up. |
...to open up...

Coward. - Are you talking to me? Who else? There is no one here besides you and me and this Elf on a branch. So be sure: it’s you who’s the coward. - Then you’re the coward’s sword. Oh yes. I’d prefer to rust in a swamp than to serve such a driveling idiot as you are. - Hey, ease off a bit! After all, you’re not really talking to me, I’ve thought it out myself not to go crazy from loneliness. I can make you silent if I want. You can’t. A warrior’s sword is a warrior’s soul. And you can’t shut your soul up. You have run away from the field of battle. You were scared, son. Not Sauron, not Boldog made you retreat – you’ve run away from an Elven maiden. - And what did you want me to do? To confess to her and to ask for her hand? But I don’t know if she loves me or not! She never told me. She didn’t because you didn’t let her to. You started to prevaricate yourself: I won’t bear a refuse, I’m afraid of a consent… You’re not only a coward but a fool also. - Why that? I made a right choice. We can’t be together anyway, so it’s better to part at once. What a wonderful reasoning! People die anyway, so let’s drown them in wells right after birth! Or before it, together with their mothers. Go ahed, hero, stifle your hope. But when fate gives you a good kick, remember that it was you who turned your back to it! What’s up with you, son? You have never done things by halves! “Yes” means yes, “no” means no. - I’m not what she needs. How do you know, you’ve never asked her! What did you expect, you dummy – that she would hang on your neck herself? - I don’t think that she could have fallen in love in two months. And how much time did you need to fall in love with her? A moment? Two? Forget this manuscript at least for a second, think about youself and her and not about Aikanaro and your grandmother Andreth! They had their own lives, you have your own. Live it, damn you, live it so that one could make a worthy song about you when you diminish in the West! - Have I not done enough for it? There can be only one measure: if you have done ALL you could or not. At least tried to do instead of wearing your pants through and complaining about your cruel fate. - Listen, shut up, would you? I’m sick anyway. Feeling sick – go relieve yourself. Don’t plague me with your vacant look. If you throw that nonsense out of your head, maybe you’ll bring yourself to go to her, to tell her everything, and to accept everything that happens. - You’re forgetting about one thing: I am guarded. Damn it all! Did that ever stop you? What are you afraid of? The worst thing that can happen to you is death, and you claimed that Nightingale alone was worthy a thousand lives and a thousand deaths, didn’t you? - Fool! I don’t fear for myself, I fear for her! Don’t. She can perfectly fear for herself and she needs no help with this. After all, she’s older than Finrod the Wise, whom you love to refer to so often. So she knows a thing or two about life. She will decide for herself, don’t worry. But don’t expect she will decide for you as well. You are ner - the man, and you must choose your ways by yourself. Decide now, or I am your sword no more and will abandon your hand in the first encounter, or break myself.

Я через "a" решила. |
Будет weidh.
Mardigan, |

Chapter 1. Beren. Just as the melting of the snows began and the mountain paths were cleared, he was surrounded. Sauron and Boldog left nothing to chance: wolves and orcs combed forest after forest, ravine after ravine, tightening the semicircle ever so closely around the hidden gorge in the foothills, where the old witch’s hut stood. The witch died on the day of Sunturn and Beren was left alone with her goat. He buried the witch and wanted to slaughter the goat, but decided not to touch it till need came. The winter had passed and the need came: the orcs were approaching and there was no way to break through the encirclement. Beren slaughtered the goat and dried its meat. He packed what he could not afford to leave behind and set out. On the next day, from the shoulder of the Wuthering Mother he saw orcs and wolves milling around the hut. But Beren was already far away and the wet snow had covered his tracks. When after a month Beren came down from the other side of the Ered Gorgor, there was not much left of him, and when he got out Nan Dungortheb – he was almost completely gone. Not discerning day and night, rocks and trees, bushes and animals, possible enemies and possible friends, he moved on – slowly, tenaciously and thoughtlessly, like an intricate Noldor clockwork toy. The shingly riverbed, that filled up only come springtime – the weidh – gave the direction: where the water made its way, so could a man. Beren went on. In his agony he has lost the moment when the pebbles stopped hurting his feet. All around him was dark, and he could not tell anymore whether it was night or complete blindness. Then he saw a light in the distance, heard laughter, voices and music, and, gasping for breath, he stumbled that way, no longer hoping that these were people and not some phantom, conjured by his fevered mind... |
