How is Thorin in this second movie, and how different is he from the Thorin of the first movie?

RA: I think one of the interesting things about Thorin and his quest is that when Gandalf is with them he must submit to the wizard’s authority. Thorin knows and acknowledges that Gandalf is the main leader. In the second movie, when Gandalf leaves, Thorin gains control of the situation at last. Unfortunately, the group has to face even greater troubles. Being locked in prison by the Mirkwood Elves is the lowest point of their quest. They are deprived of all their belongings and their weapons, hence they lose their hope. This is the core developing of the character in the second movie. In this second chapter of the trilogy, Thorin realizes that Bilbo is not just a mere member of the Company, but also that the Hobbit will be a decisive element in order to regain the Arkenstone. This is what we will see happening to Thorin during the second movie – a further step towards his success.

Under this premise, in this movie Thorin sees the Lonely Mountain, his lost homeland. What effect does it have on him?

RA: It’s very interesting, because it’s a prolonged and complex push-and-pull. I had known that from the beginning, and understanding how to perform this feeling has been a big challenge. The quest is the reason which drives Thorin. The map and the key are the catalysts spurring him; the promise of his Reign and his throne are very personal reasons, as is also the promise to reclaim all their wealth for his people. But at the same time, the terror and the demon residing in the Mountain repulse him to the point of staying away, as much he is attracted to it. It is very complicated, it is a moment of strong emotion for them all.

You said that when you started filming, the fact Peter Jackson trusted you has helped you find the leader within yourself in order to portray Thorin. How important was that, in order to continue this journey?

RA: I think finding my love for the character played an important part; I didn’t like him very much at the beginning, I often did not agree with his behavior, I was in conflict with his choices, but I tried to defend him. But I think I found then some traits that made me love him, for instance his loyalty towards his men and the fact he was ready to die for them. And regarding the moment when they reach the Lonely Mountain and he looks at his companions, the Dwarves – it is a fantastic moment. I discovered another facet of Thorin at that moment: he is overcome by that experience. His ego is not inflated from his triumph; it was like he was saying “We did it together.” This was my motivation in the movie.

Can you tell us about the Elves who capture Thorin and his Company in Mirkwood? What are Thorin’s feelings towards the Elves?

RA: It’s Thorin’s worst nightmare. I mean, Elves and Dwarves have always been antagonistic towards each other. They were in a war - but this is a personal matter. When Dwarves were annihilated and forced to leave the Mountain and go into exile, Thorin looked at Thranduil almost begging for help. And Thranduil turned his back to all of them, denying any help, forcing them to wander across Middle-earth as vagabonds and then build a new life in the Blue Mountains. I don’t think Thorin was able to forget that. Being captured, brought in front of Thranduil and locked in prison is the lowest point in Thorin’s life. But before being imprisoned he has the opportunity to voice his resentment towards Thranduil. He says: “This is what you did to my people. This is the reason of the antagonism between us and the reason why I will never forgive you”. There is a feeling of satisfaction in being able to tell all of this, but in spite of everything, Thranduil will stop them and they won’t be able to continue their journey because they will be locked in the vaults – where they will accidentally discover that the locks were designed and built by Dwarves, and therefore they know they won’t be able to get out.

You and the rest of the cast filmed pick-ups in New Zealand this year. How was it to put on those heavy boots again and be together with all the guys?

RA: Wonderful, to tell the truth. I went back there before shooting the pick-ups, and it was like I never went away. I prepared myself; I knew I would get in character again, but I spent a couple of days before being able to find Thorin again. I was with one foot inside and one outside for the whole first day of shooting, but then I found him. I think everyone came back full of satisfaction for what we did in the first movie. Shooting pick-ups meant to find as many details as possible for the characters to better define the story and enhance it for the second movie.

How was working again with Peter? Was the experience the same or different ?

RA: It was different. I think the trust between us grew stronger. There has always been trust, but I think it is more evident when you shoot with someone a second time. He worked even more meticulously. We found shortcuts to many things because I was able to perfectly understand what he wanted without him needing to say it. Sometimes I was surprised by that. I went home in the evening thinking about the scene for the next day, and the following morning Peter would be telling me exactly what I had imagined. I was saying to myself : “We really are on the same wavelength.” That was wonderful. During the last 2 weeks of shooting I was working together with Peter. We pushed to the limit and we managed to go all the way together till the last week. All I can say is that our relationship is based on trust.

In this second movie there will be some new characters, like Legolas, Tauriel, Thranduil and Beorn. Can you tell us how was working with Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace and Mikael Persbrandt?

RA: Sadly, the only character I didn’t get to work with is Evangeline’s one, although we are in a scene together where we exchange a glance. But I had great fun working with Mikael, Lee and Orlando. I had an amazing scene with Lee, and I was really satisfied to play it because, as I told you before, it’s the occasion to listen to the Dwarves claim what’s theirs, and it’s rare to hear them do that. I also had an incredible scene with Orlando who grabs Orcrist from Thorin thinking he had stolen it from the Elves, since it is an Elvish blade.

Как он рассказывает о Торине! "his loyalty towards his men and the fact he was ready to die for them. And regarding the moment when they reach the Lonely Mountain and he looks at his companions, the Dwarves – it is a fantastic moment. I discovered another facet of Thorin at that moment: he is overcome by that experience. His ego is not inflated from his triumph; it was like he was saying “We did it together.”"
