Luke Evans specialises in humanising larger-than-life characters in massive movies. Take for example, Apollo in Clash of the Titans (2010), Zeus in Immortals (2011) and now Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Bard is the archer who befriends Bilbo (Martin Freeman), assists the dwarves in their effort to reclaim Laketown from the dragon, Smaug, and who ultimately “ spoiler alert! “ slays the dragon.

ک کAs an actor, if I'm playing the role, I want to bring my humanity to it,'' the 34-year-old Welshman says. ک کI want to make my character relatable, even if I am playing a Greek god. It was difficult because he was a mythical character, but I wanted people to relate him in some way. And there's the fact that he was a father figure.

ک کBard, it's the same thing,'' Evans continues. ک کAs much as he's this dragon killer, he's an unlikely hero and a father of children and he's got a lot of flaws. I try to pull on the human, raw emotions, because that makes a character way more dimensional than if they're just a God or something else.

ک کI think it's always good to come from a very human place,'' he says. ک کThat's the case even if the character is not human, or is human but not like most other humans, like most of my characters.'' JRR Tolkien didn't devote much ink to developing Bard the Bowman in either The Hobbit or his appendices to The Lord of the Rings.

However, co-writers Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson expounded upon the character in their screenplays for The Desolation of Smaug, due out on December 13, and There and Back Again, the third film in director Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, set to open next year.

œThere is a lot going on there,'' Evans says, speaking by telephone from the northeast coast of Ireland during an off day from shooting his latest film, Dracula Untold. ک کWe've not drawn away from the spine of the story. It's still there.

What we've done is allow Bard the space and time to develop as a character.

ک کWe see his relationships with his children, the place where he resides,'' the actor says. ک کYou see much more of him working things out and having way more of an input into the journey he's on than is in the book. It's nice to see, in this film, that he has this personal journey that's been given space to breathe.

ک کYou see way more of his story and Laketown and what happens in Laketown than just him killing this dragon and becoming king of Dale,'' Evans continues. ک کThere's way more to Bard than meets the eye. He's more than just a hero.'' He adds that he appreciated Jackson's take on Bard. Even more so, the filmmaker impressed him with his ability to hone in on details, on the fine character moments, despite the massive scale of the movies, which involved complicated action sequences, outdoor shooting, dozens of actors, thousands of extras, intricate special effects and more.

ک کIt was a joy to talk about the character and have his opinions about things in my performance,'' Evans says. ک کAs much as there were sweeping locations, lots of animals and some explosions, he was able to focus and pinpoint little moments with me in a scene, which I always thought was incredible.

ک کI thought it was incredible that he could process all of that and still have the eye for detail and never forget about the actors,'' he says. ک کI thought that was a wonderful thing.'' Also special, albeit in a different way, was Jackson's native New Zealand.

Evans filmed there for a year, marvelling at what he calls the most natural, unspoiled place he's ever visited.

ک کI learned how to fish,'' Evans says. ک کI lived on the beach, and so I used to fish almost every other weekend and catch kahawai, this amazing New Zealand fish that's like, I don't know for sure, sea trout or sea bass. I caught so many that I'd feed the whole street.

ک کI got into it and enjoyed the Kiwi life,'' he continues. ک کThe people are incredible. We all lived near each other, people who worked on the film, and it was a little community. When you're so far away from home and family and friends, and when the time difference is so extreme, they're your family when you're there. They are everything.

ک کSo it was a wonderful experience.'' Up next for Evans is a horror one-two punch, Dracula Untold and a new version of The Crow. The former is an origin tale about Vlad Tepes, better known as Vlad the Impaler.

ک کIt goes right back to the beginning,'' Evans says. ک کIt's not the story that people expect.'' He promises that The Crow will be ک کinsanely loyal'' to the source material, given that James O'Barr, creator of the comic book, is an active participant in the production. Evans will play the title character, the undead vigilante previously portrayed by Brandon Lee in the 1989 film, by Edward Furlong, Eric Mabius and Vincent Perez in sequels and by Mark Dacascos in a short-lived television series.

Like most of his filmography to date, his upcoming films involve a fair share of action, special effects and the supernatural.

Does Evans ever dream of doing something lower-tech, perhaps a conversation- heavy two-hander set in a cafe? ک کI'd love to do one of those,'' he says.

ک کYou try to have some control over what you do, but it's very organic. Things happen.

If you'd asked me five years ago if I'd be playing Dracula at 34, I definitely would have laughed in your face. And look at me now “ I'm playing Dracula, and it's my first title role.

ک کYou've got to be open to new ideas and new roles,'' Evans concludes. ک'Who knows? This is where I'm going right now. The wheels are not slowing and I'm trying to enjoy the journey.''
