Из "Истории "Хоббита":

фрагмент прощальной речи Бильбо, отправляющегося домой
<Now> the hour came to say farewell to his friends. ‘Farewell Dwalin’ he said ‘and Farewell Fili & Kili, and Farewell Dori and Nori, and Oin and Gloin, and Bifur & Bofur and Bombur’ he said. And turning towards the mountain ‘Fairwell king Thorin Oakenshield.’

примечания
In the original story neither Fili nor Kili died fighting alongside their greatuncle but survived to the end of the tale. The idea that the two most likeable of all Bilbo’s companions should also die in the battle – one of the saddest moments in the whole story, even though it occurs offstage while our narrator is hors de combat – first appears in the continuation of the typescript that eventually (autumn 1936) replaced the Third Phase manuscript: ‘Of the twelve companions of Thorin ten remained. Fili and Kili had fallen defending him with shield and body, for he was their mother’s elder brother’ (1/1/68:3). This change thus postdates the completion of the book by some three and a half years.

версия автора "Истории "Хоббита" о причине решения угробить двоих персонажей
But the two young dwarves’ descent is through the female line, being the grandsons of Thorin’s sister (the sons of his sister in the published text and later family trees), whereas the patriarchal dwarves obviously trace the kingship through the male line; it is indeed possible that the deaths of Fili and Kili were added to the story during the typescript stage precisely to avoid such confusion.
