From the Panel:
- Martin Freeman was always trying to make O’Gorman and Turner laugh on set, pulling silly faces behind the camera at them so the ywould muck up their takes.
- He’s a fan of Peter Jackson’s early work, Braindead and The Frighteners in particular. He hadn’t seen the LOTR films, and hadn’t read The Hobbit since he was a kid.
- If he could writing a character into/or star in any movie, he’d like to do something along the lines of Saving Private Ryan. He also really likes Platoon.
- He hasn’t seen Sherlock or Being Human
- He didn’t get to work with Cumberbatch, and as far as he’s aware Cumberbatch is only doing the voice of Smaug, not motion capture, as there are no scale models of Smaug at WETA which is typically what they do for CGI (although this would contradict other interviews where it’s been stated Smaug would be motion capture?)
- On completion of filming, he was gifted the pair of Fili’s knives by WETA, the actual good quality steel forged ones, not the aluminium or fibreglass doubles.
- When asked what other race in Middle Earth he’d want to be, he said he wouldn’t like to be an Elf as they’re stuck up. He would like to be in Avatar (Na’vi), as they can run fast.
- The beard was his own, only the moustache braids were added on as prosthetics. However he would get sweaty and they would slip off so they had to keep getting reapplied. The metal beads at the end made them heavy so they would swing around and hit him in the face if he moved to quickly.
Extra things I asked at the signing:
- He didn’t have any trouble with the moustache braids dunking in his coffee or food as they had usually slipped off by that stage, otherwise he would take them off before hand.
- (spoilers?) In his opinion, Fili would have made a good King Under The Mountain if the BOFA hadn’t happened. He’s a real team player, looking out for the other dwarves and considering their needs, feels that he’s got some good leadership qualities and would have been a fair king.
- He’s not really into the fantasy/sci-fi genre, nor is he into horror. He likes “classic” movies.
- I made a joke questioningly about his brother Kili having a thing of elves and he laughed and said “yes, he does!” and we discussed Kili being ugly by dwarf standards and lucky he was a prince otherwise the bullying might have been bad.
- Dean discussed what Yaks were with Peter Hambleton (Gloin) and I, why they were used for the beards, what happens to all the bald shaven yaks. This was a very uninformative conversation. Basically we came to the conclusion there are bald yaks running around Nepal somewhere and wondered whether people eat yak.
- I spent about 15mins taking to him but that’s all I can remember that would be of interest to you guys.

- Он не работал с Камбербатчем и так же насколько ему известно, Камбербатч только озвучивал Смауга - никакого мокапа. Так же не было масштабных моделей Смауга, что довольно нетипично для Веты. (Мое прим. О, какая секретность!)
-После окончания съемок ему подарили ножи Фили, сделаные Ветой, настоящие стальные, а не алюминевые или пластиковые.
-Когда его спросили представителем какой другой расы в Средиземье он хочет быть, он сказал, что не хотел бы быть эльфом, так как они застряли (?). Он хотел бы быть в
Аватаре (На'ви), так как они могут быстро бегать.
-Борода была его собственная, усы-косички были добавлены. Когда он потел они постоянно соскальзывали и их прилепляли по-новой. Металлические бусины делали их тяжелыми, чтобы они качались. Но если он быстро двигался, то они ударяли его по лицу.
Доп. вопросы:
- У него не было никаких проблем с усами, они ни попадали в кофе, ни продукты питания, поскольку они обычно соскользывали на этом этапе, иначе он бы их снимал, прежде чем руки.
-(спойлеры?) По его мнению, Фили был бы хорошим королем под горой, если бы Битвы пяти воинств не произошло. Он настоящий командный игрок, он всегда присматривает за другими гномами, у него есть некоторые хорошие лидерские качества и он был бы справедливым королем.
