Part 1

19 September 2000

What inspired you to become an actor?

"I think deep down I always wanted to be an actor. It was the one thing in school that I was undoubtedly enthusiastic about and good at. I coasted along being good at German, Geography, English and Football but there wasn't anything that I could really call my thing, my niche.

In second year of school I was given the part of one of Scrooges workers in 'Christmas Carol' and just relished the performance as well as the rehearsals. In the next few years I was to play Bugsy Malone and the Artful Dodger in school plays and started to look outside of school for more plays to do.

I joined Manchester Youth Theatre and was always given encouragement by family and teachers etc.

So in direct answer to your question I think the thing that inspired me to be an actor was the fact that when I acted I enjoyed it and was always told that if I worked hard enough I could go somewhere."

If you weren't an actor what other profession would you have chosen?

"If I wasn't an actor and could pick a profession I would be a professional football player - left wing for Manchester United but realistically I think I would have gone to Uni and then travelled and I think I would have delayed 'real work' for a while and tried to be a scuba diving instructor in Thailand or Bali, Fiji wherever!!"

What techniques/methods do you use to memorise your lines?

"Due to the long hours we are working on this movie, 13 or 15 hours sometimes!!, there is more than enough time to learn lines.

If there is a particularly long section of dialogue or a lot of lines I tend to read it only twice or three times. I have always found that I have done my best work when I don't quite know my lines. So sometimes I unlearn my lines by throwing in words that are not there and then taking them out in the take."

What would be your dream role?

"Dream role - playing one of the Busby Babes, or a footballer or a surfer as we have all taken up surfing and are loving it. Seriously, any role that is written well and is challenging for me in a job with a good director and dealing with a subject matter that I find interesting and I am happy."

Of all the characters you have played which would you consider as being most like yourself?

"Character most like me? Obviously all the parts that I have played have a element of me in them 'cos I am playing them. I think Merry has a lot of the attitude that I live by - optimistic, cheeky, cocky, quick and ready but also Etienne had a lot of fire inside him which I possess. I played Geoff in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates for four years so I literally grew up with that programme and there is a lot of Geoff in me as well."

Part 2

11 October 2000

What was your reaction when you were told you had the part of Merry?

"My initial reaction to being cast as Merry was one of silent wide smiling reflection for a couple of minutes, and then of a huge rush of adrenaline, and I have to confess a small amount of alcohol intake!!"

How did you initially feel about living and working in New Zealand for over 12 months - far from home, family and friends?

"I was working on Monsignor Renard in France so I had a week to come home, celebrate with my family and friends, move out of my house PACK for a year and a half. And it was hell.

I will say one of the hardest weeks of my life, probably the hardest, as I had to be everywhere and wanted to see everyone but COULDN'T. So actually getting on the plane was a huge release and I could just concentrate on the job in hand, getting to understand Merry on the flight."

What is your favourite place in New Zealand?

"Well because I have spent so much time in Wellington it would be easy to say here 'cos I feel so comfortable etc but I won't say that.

Some of the best time working I had was in Hamilton as we worked everyday in Hobbiton and stayed in a gorgeous hotel in the country and got to know Ian McKellen their etc so that was great.

For a good time I don't think Queenstown is too bad either, lots to do and the town is always busy."

What would you like to have accomplished in your life say in the next ten years?

"In the next ten years or hopefully in the next few decisions I make as an actor. I hope to prove to directors, casting directors, fellow actors and more importantly my peers, that I am an actor worth watching due to the choices I make both in the parts I play and in the way I play them.

I hope I can prove myself versatile enough to try my hand at a lot of differing roles."

Can you tell us about your character Jimmy Furey in the docodrama This is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper?

"I played a small part in 'This is Personal'. Jimmy Furey was a young boy whose girlfriend was attacked by the Ripper. Jimmy gave chase but because he was barefoot he did not catch him.

Jimmy was at first put under suspicion as the Ripper but was released. His relationship broke down with his girlfriend. Sad.

If you had visitors/friends arriving for dinner in 30 minutes, what would you cook?

"If I had only thirty minutes to cook. I would do roasted ratatouille with a chorizo tomato sauce, saffron rice, ciabatta bread cooked with garlic and olive oil and parsnips cooked in parmesan cheese. All done in maybe just over 30 minutes but hey we can wait for that."

Part 3

8 December 2000

What was it like acting with Patricia Routledge (Hetty Wainthropp)?

"I was thrown in at the deep end just after my eighteenth birthday when I started 6 months filming on Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. It was a real baptism of fire. I had never been on a film set before and now here I was acting in a major tv programme with the most famous actress on British television.

Patricia was fantastic, very patient as I am sure I made a lot of mistakes. She was extremely protective over me and I will forever remember all the advice she gave me.

I was initially quite intimidated by the idea of working with her but remembered that we are all people, we all exist on the same level and no one should affect the way you would normally behave just because they are *famous*.

Also a special mention to Derek Benfield who played Patricia's husband. Derek was also very good to me and kind and helpful."

Which character have you enjoyed playing the most thus far?

"The character I have most enjoyed playing at the mo is Etienne from Monsignor Renard, as it was so much fun.

I got some really meaty stuff to work with and was given quite a bit of freedom with the director of the final two episodes, David Wheatley, as we had a real understanding.

Due to that fact, I felt able to take risks and try as hard as I could to become Etienne. He did things that would not gain him too much love from an audience but I wanted to allow the audience to feel sorry for him and go some way to understanding his actions. That was a real challenge and that for me is what wakes me up in the morning.

Over here (NZ) the opportunities we have been given to dive into the characters has been fantastic. Learning to kayak, horseride, swordfight, learn a different accent, explore the books has all been truly great fun."

Which of the countries you've worked in is your favourite?

"New Zealand is the best country I have worked in thus far. It's so far from home but has a lot of familiar things from home, the language for example. But just being in a country that is so keen on the outdoors and sport and lifestyle is a real breath of fresh air. I could live here forever.

The people are the real gems of New Zealand. Friendly, funny, helpful. And the ladies...ah.."

How have you coped with learning to ride a horse?

"Due to the scale issues in the Lord of the Rings I haven't ridden a horse as much as I would have liked. But I have tried to do as much riding as my schedule allows and love how it makes you feel when you are on a horse. Having an understanding, unspoken, with another animal is something else."

What are your favourite songs?

"Hard, hard question. At the mo on my playlist everchanging is:

Shiver by Coldplay, Tricky by Prince, This Boy by the Beatles, Sheffield Sex City by Pulp, Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen, Know How by Young MC, I am the Resurrection by the Stone Roses, Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie, Slide Away by Oasis, Hewletts Daughter by Granddaddy, Rappers Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang, Monochrome by the Sundays......"

In 5 words or less how would you describe your fellowship co-stars in Lord of the Rings?

Elijah Wood - Kind, quirky, positive, thinker, talented
Sean Astin - Motivated, friendly, pensive, great Father
Viggo Mortensen - Intense, artist, centred, generous, insane
Orli (Orlando Bloom) - Cockney, floppy, unpredictable, funny, dreamer
Ian Mckellen - Kind, British, gentleman, cheeky, experienced
Sean Bean - Northern, funny, amazing, twitchy, football
John Rhys Davies - Mad, intriguing, boats, English, storyteller
Billy Boyd - Funny, kind, gifted, calm, playboy

Part 4

9 January 2001

At the LOTR press conference held on the 12th November 2000, you wore a vest with the Maori words 'Kia Toa' written across the front. What is the meaning/significance of these words or the vest itself?

I got the vest in Hunters & Collectors in Wellington my fav clothes shop here. It cost about 20 bucks and I love it, great colour, great fit. I think Kia Toa means warrior or strength, so I hope it reflects both my physical and mental well being at the mo.

In Hetty Wainthropp Series 4 in the episode 'Something to Treasure' you appeared naked in a shower scene (which has been a hot topic at the forum). As an actor how do you prepare mentally for scenes of this nature and do you find it difficult/stressful?

I tend not to think about it until it comes to the day. It would appear to be a hard thing to do but you are surrounded by great crews who appreciate it's stressful. I just got in the shower, bang water comes on....finish the scene and a towel would appear....no probs.

After working for over 18 months on LOTR how do you feel now that filming is coming to an end?

How does it feel to come to the end of such an epic job etc.We went out with all our make up artists the other night and brought along photos etc. It was so amazing to see how far we have all come. How much we have all grown and how much we all care for one another. I know I haven't fully realised how affected I will be when this job finishes and to be fair I am trying very hard to concentrate on the job in hand not how to deal with not seeing so many special people for a while.

Having worked with thespians like Ian McKellen and Ian Holm. What was/is it like working with them and in terms of acting style is there anything that you have learnt from them that you could take on board and emulate (ie strive to equal in quality/actions)?

It has been a very important job in that respect. We have all (been) soooooo long together that we intimately know all our strengths and weaknesses in terms of work. So I will go to certain actors for advice and other actors for different guidance. I try to watch the senior actors as much as possible Ian McKellen, Ian Holm, Sean Bean etc. But to give everyone their credit, there is not a bad actor in the fellowship. Everyone is unfeasibly talented in my opinion.

Lastly, have you done anything crazy in NZ ie bungy jumping?

Aside from horseriding, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, swordfighting, snowboarding, Shotover jet, fly by wire, djaying in bars, karaoke, eating crazy food, and doing the biggest bunjy in New Zealand (the Nevis in Queenstown, 400ft).......NO!!!

Part 5

26 January 2001

What if any previous jobs have you had in between acting and what would've been the most unusual?

The other jobs I have had are as follows, when I was at college I worked for two weeks sorting mail in a huge Post Office. We wound up the workers telling them we were one half of the huge boy band 'Take That', and some believed us. The job was that boring we would spend the whole time lying to people about what we did and who we were. Also I worked in BHS (British Home Stores) and I consider that my least favourite job. For some reason I wasn't liked or trusted that much and my main duties were keeping the shelves stocked with beer and chocolate Santas. Terrible job.

I was also a chef for a restaurant in Didsbury (Manchester) called Quincey's. I was a saute chef and could cook a mean stir fry - shrimp and snow pea, or a great chicken fajita. I liked working there and 'cos I was a young lad and worked long hours for my age I got paid well and felt like a real man about town with 100 pound in my back pocket etc.

At home would you describe yourself as being a tidy person or a lazy person when it comes to housework etc?

I think that question should be geared towards my cleaners in NZ but seeing as they are not here I will have to answer. I am lazy. I will tidy but only when it gets really dirty or someone is coming round etc.

I like to have a tidy kitchen but I am not too bothered about my room or living room etc. My theory is that when it's untidy I feel comfortable, like it feels lived in, and its only gonna get untidy if you tidy it so wait, wait, wait!!

What qualities/attributes do you look for in a friend/partner?

Trust, for me one of the most important.

Also I am obsessively loyal and will support my friend whatever. In that respect I look for a great deal of loyalty in my mates/girlfriend.

I enjoy spending time with people who don't seem to have too many problems. I am blessed with being relatively sorted out as a human, so for me the stress of constantly having to mentally support someone is a chore, fair enough if a friend has a problem but not ALL THE TIME!!!

What kind of partner do you make, are you a romantic?

Another question someone else should answer but I think I must be maddening because my energy is so up.

I am always everywhere at the same time and want to be involved with everything. I can't stand being still, or feeling like their is fun going on that I am not at. So with previous girlfriends I have always got myself in trouble by double or triple dating. What I mean by that is, that I feel I can never say no to anyone so I am always finding myself having to go somewhere and leave early to see that person and then going off to see someone else.

I love a busy schedule so I always fill my time with too many things that I cannot possibly do.

I am sure girls I have gone out with before have got tired of me running off or stubbornly saying no to things that they want to do just 'cos I have no time.

I am also conscious, at the moment, of my job being the most important thing in my life and everything else having to get in line after that. That can cause problems.

Where would you take someone on a first date?

I would take them to my favourite restaurant so we can TALK.

I find it odd to go to the cinema first 'cos you get no chance to interact and see if you like this person and if it goes well then a drunken evening is always a good way to gel quickly.

And Manchester United always impresses ladies, must be Beckham!!

Part 6

24 February 2001

If your home caught fire, which items would you save?

If my house caught fire I would save myself and anyone in there and I would try and save all the dairies and letters that I have collected as everything else is replaceable. And I would sit on the lawn watching my house burn cherry red and record it in my diary!!

If you read anybody's diary, whose would it be?

Oh, a moralistic question. I suppose I should say that would be an invasion of privacy and I would never do it. But I think if I had the choice I should like to read Buddha's diary and see if along the way he may record the "answer" so I may find Nirvana via a shortcut!!

If you were invisible for an hour, where would you go and what would you do?

Ermm..ahhh look I am a guy, use your imagination. I can't write it down. I can get put away for less!!

What irritates you the most?

Racism, sexism, homophobia, ignorance. I am irritated by all these things alot. Also, having no beer in the fridge and losing a girls number that you really liked.

What would you uninvent?

I would uninvent Hitler's mum. And guns, and broccoli.

Have you ever had your heart broken?

I have been heartbroken once and it has affected all my relationships from there on. But now I look at it as a occupational hazard. If you are in the meat market at some point you are gonna get mad cows disease.

What has been your most romantic gesture ever?

I am sure there has been hundreds but right now, I can't think of one...eek

When did you last cry, and why?

I balled my eyes out to Billy Elliot last week and Lighe (Elijah Wood) and I are gonna watch it again tonight. So I will keep you informed on the Wood waterworks.

What has been the lowest part of your life so far?

Lowest part of my life was either splitting up with my first girlfriend and losing all my mates, or the year before last when 3 of my grandparents died.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Greatest extravagance easy clothes. And good food.

How would you like to be remembered?

I would like to be remembered as someone who could make people laugh. I would just like to be remembered really.

Part 7

12 April 2001

It is thought that if one leaves the country of their birth after the age of 2, they keep that accent. How is it that yours has changed after 12 years of living in Berlin?

I was brought up by English speaking parents who are both fluent in German but we spoke English around the house generally. Most of my pals were from the army forces who were stationed in the barracks at the time.

Most regiments moved after 4 years so I only made friends for 4 years. I think that was why I got into acting 'cos it was something I could take with me and also why I am able to mimic lots of people as from a young age I hung around with Irish, English, German, Scottish...lots of different sounding people.

When I came back to England, Manchester I was trying hard as most kids do to fit in....first lesson...try to sound similar to your potential freinds. The last thing a twelve year old boy needs at a new school is an accent that sounds alien. I learnt that in about 2 hours.

If you could be in a remake of a film, which film would it be and what part would you play?

I have strongly identified with Richard from The Beach, Will from Good Will Hunting, Billy from Kes and as you guys already know, cried my heart out to Billy Elliot like a little boy who has lost his bag of sweets down the drain.

But I would love to play Johnny boy in a remake of Mean Streets...awesome.

What's the funniest thing that has happened during filming of LOTR?

I had 2 nights at Orlando's house that I CAN'T go into where Orli and I laughed for about three hours straight. I thought I was going to have to be sedated!!!

But probably the funniest thing that happened while filming...first day...FIRST DAY on set...the 4 Hobbits have to fall down a hill...as we land...the Woodster lets out a...not so silent emission from a place usually not spoken of...Billy and I laughed until I nearly had a hernia.

Also, I must say, the nine of us together is always hilarious. And Mr Boyd and I are in the midst of writing something funnier then a penguin playing a banjo.

As a Manchester United Supporter what is your greatest moment in the clubs history, was it the Champions League win?

Without a doubt doing the treble. I was in a bar in France working on Monsignor Renard...I lost my voice and could not talk for the next day...I would say the happiest I have ever been in my life...and my mates phoned me from outside old Trafford...and twenty or so guys all sang...ONE DOM MONAGHAN THEIRS ONLY ONE DOMINIC MONAGHAN...it was special.

(NB correct me if I'm wrong, the "treble" refers to Man U being the first club in history to win the English Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup all in one season 98/99 - Sharon)

If you had three wishes what would they be?

Well if it's for fun...I would say...able to fly...turn into any animal...and think of a good third wish!

Merry the Hobbit

It's a shame what they cut from the second movie, which is kind of like puberty. We go through growth spurts.

Собственно интервью

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr !

Еще цитатка:

Monaghan: I never had a problem with my dating life
