Two Towers’ Cast and Crew Speak Out on War and Peace, Good and Evil

Vaughn and other religion writers (including those from Focus on the Family and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) screened the film and interviewed cast and crew members.

Dominic Monaghan, 26, from Manchester, England, plays the hobbit Merry. He told the roundtable that he and other members of the cast had given the issue a lot of thought.

“The term ‘good versus evil’ is a confusing thing for me because I don’t know if the lines can be drawn that easily,” he said. “They’re kind of blurred. I’m sure there are different countries around the world that have considered both Billy and myself’s country evil.”

Monaghan was referring to Billy Boyd, his 34-year-old co-star from Glasgow, Scotland, who plays Merry’s friend and fellow hobbit, Pippin.

“It’s just an upsetting kind of world to live in,” Monaghan said. “I’ve never really experienced this kind of conflict before. I’ve always lived in a peaceful kind of time. It is confusing and it is upsetting. But I don’t really know if the term ‘good versus evil’ is appropriate. It’s just two different cultures clashing together.”

Billy Boyd was quiet and pensive as he talked about good and evil, war and peace. “I think war is always awful, and I don’t know what the other options are,” he said. “If you feel as though something awful is happening somewhere, what do you do? Because war always seems to be the wrong thing, but I don’t know what the other thing to do is.”

Monaghan, on the other hand, was much more straightforward.

“Trying to get everybody to just calm down would be a great way forward,” he said.

By the time 7:00 rolled around, the place was packed - and warm! There were a couple of fangirls behind me, who ended up sitting on the floor in front later, who had driven 23 hours from Bismarck, North Dakota (or is it South?), god bless them. They were internet knowledgable, and very nice, and soon made friends with another couple of fangirls who were local. The majority of the crowd appeared to be college students as well.

Finally, Billy showed up at a little after the start time of 7:30. He was wearing his trademark leather jacket and black shirt, and I was watching the door I knew he'd come into. I and a few others started clapping and soon all of us were.

He looked wonderful, although he's getting over a cold. You couldn't tell it from his voice, and he still was very involved in the discussion, and animated. He's a real trouper, he really is. He and the Master, Stephen Brown, went and sat at the table. There were to be 3 clips from FOTR and a clip from Sniper, with a couple of questions from the Master in-between, and Q&A at the end. I must say that Prof. Brown did a wonderful job - very relaxed but professional, good questions.

I can't write everything down now - it's late, and I have limited internet access, since Prodigy doesn't have Canadian access numbers, but he really was a joy to see - so well-spoken, relaxed, funny but thoughtful, and a natural speaker and teacher. I will say that he said he has a possible project on the stage in London this summer, so here's hoping. Other than that, he said he'd been taking a break for the last couple of months, since work wrapped up on MAC:FSOTW just before December, which was then followed by TTT activities until Christmas. Yes, he and Dom worked on the screenplay for their possible movie during weekends off in the MAC:FSOTW shoot.

The clips were: the fireworks, "second breakfast", and Moria - from the finding of the book, through Pip's disastrous tweaking of the arrow in the skeleton, all the way through to Frodo's mithril shirt. As for Sniper 470 - it was apparently a tape off of the presentation on Scottish TV, since it started with The New Found Land logo and was not film quality; I would guess that he had to use a copy for the program. It went all the way to just after the *ahem* toilet scene (kind of surprised it didn't end a bit earlier!).

Afterwards, there was a very nice long Q&A, then clapping and a swarm to the stage for autographs. I didn't try to get an autograph, since they didn't seem to need even more people up there in the throng that appeared to swallow up Billy (I hope he survived! *g*). But I'm glad I went. I'll never get an opportunity like this again, and it was worth it.

And, Billy Boyd - you are a top notch human being for coming out and doing this wonderful talk for a small audience at a small college in the middle of Canada - thank you."

BIlly Boyd In Medicine Hat Report
When Billy was called up (after the MC called him Billy Elliot by mistake - a good chuckle) he literally pranced up to the mike. He said that he was seeing some of the films for the first time that night as well. After his intro, the MC tripped over a step while returning to the front and fell towards Billy. He made a joke of it and a short little hug ensued. Billy is absolutely hilarious. He doesn't seem to miss any comedic opportunity.

After the shorts (I must mention once again that they were quite good) there was a short question and answer period. He made another little comedic performance when trying to sit on the stage that was at his shoulder height. He made a few fake jumps at it then the MC pushed him up. Quite funny. There were some questions about the Scottish film industry, one about his high budget vs. low budget preference (no preference), some about his film specifically including what drew him to that script (apparently it was the first Sci Fi every filmed in Scotland among other reasons), and one about the games 'Cup' and 'Teg'.

I asked if he and Dom were still working on their script together. He told about how that started (while they were sitting in Treebeard's 'branches' with nothing else to do) and how it's coming along. They finished a first draft and the people they showed it to liked it but wanted to bring writers in on it. He still doesn't know if they're going to do that but right now they're working on a second draft and Dom has it.

After all that there was a little thing down the street at a bar called "Mario's". A little 'rub shoulders with Billy Boyd' thing. The three of us had a nice little chat with him and got pictures of the three of us with him (sadly not digital so I can't share them now). I got my booklet from the FOTR Extended edition signed and one of the friends I was with got her Two Towers book signed somewhere in the chapter where Pippin and Merry are talking to Treebeard. We thanked him for his time and I had a good trip home once I quieted down the two screaming girls.

I would definitely recommend anyone who can to go see Billy and the films in Edmonton or Burlington. He is a very funny and friendly guy and the shorts are awesome too.

The Calgary Sun printed an article on Billy Boyd's brief visit to the city's airport yesterday. He says some tantalizing stuff about The Return of the King.

Not even a minute passes before someone recognizes Billy Boyd.

A young boy whispers excitedly to his equally thrilled friends, who in turn run off to tell their classmates. And before you can say "Treebeard," the Lord of the Rings actor is ambushed by more than a dozen pen-wielding pre-teens.

It's become a common occurrence for the 34-year-old Scot - who plays the fun-loving hobbit Pippin - since the blockbuster success of the first two Lord of the Rings movies, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, directed by New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson.

"The Lord of the Rings has become such a part of popular culture," says Boyd, after taking care of his young fans' photo and autograph requests.

"People love the movies and they just get excited when they see someone from them, no matter who it is. It's always positive."

Boyd was in town briefly yesterday and had the chance to check out the Calgary International Airport's Spaceport science center, where he met his idolizing school group.

The actor is in Alberta to promote Sniper 470, a 20-minute short film in which he appears as an astronaut dealing with the loneliness and solitude of space.

The piece was screened last night at the Medicine Hat Film Festival and will be shown Saturday as part of an evening of Scottish short film at the Edmonton Film Festival.

The Glasgow-based actor hasn't had much downtime lately and in May, he and the rest of the LOTR cast will head back to New Zealand to film pick-up shots for the trilogy's last installment, The Return of the King.

Boyd has seen part of a rough cut of Return and says the new film is by far the best.

"I don't think people have any idea - it's incredible," says Boyd, who still keeps in touch with his co-stars, including Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom and John Rhys-Davies.

"We've started with the best source material and then the script they wrote is probably the best screenplay I've ever read."

"I was nearly in tears just reading the screenplay. It was so emotional.

On top of that, people already know the character and have been on journeys with all these guys. This is sort of the end of all those stories. It's just got so much going for it before (Jackson) adds the special touches."

Boyd was disappointed that Jackson was snubbed in the best director category at this year's Academy Awards and says it would be a "travesty" if he is overlooked next year.

"What he has done, no director has ever done," Boyd says emphatically.

"No one has made a trilogy like this. And not only that, to make it so successful critically and with the public. It's a beautiful piece of art and I really do think it would be a travesty if he didn't win an Oscar for it, as well as every other award going."

While Boyd admits most people are only familiar with his furry-footed LOTR character, he says the film epic has opened doors in his career.

He will be seen next in director Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe in November.

As well, he and LOTR co-star Dominic Monaghan (Merry) have written a screenplay that has received some interest.

Я вот хочу поделиться: вчера на остановке мною был встречен молодой человек, похожий на Дома! Причем, происходило это как всегда -я смотрела на него во все глаза , а он меня испугался. Потом подъехал автобус, и в неразберихе я его уже не заметила... Теперь думаю, реально ли в нашем маленьком городе еще раз увиедть его?

Спешу обрадовать всех присутствующих: я туда не попала в связи с довольно странными обстоятельствами, невзирая на то, что все было вроде бы под контролем. Видимо, это была рука судьбы.
Я знакома с несколькими товарищами, которые там были, и вечером говорила по телефону с двумя барышнями. Обе разочарованы. Нет, сам фильм понравился, было сказано, что "a little weird but kinda funky". Но это типичная реакция североамериканцев на европейское кино.

Комментарии, помимо этого:
Было очень много народу, реакция зала была такой, как будто Билли очень знаменитый голливудский актер.
Билли был очень простуженный и явно чувствовал себя плохо, потому что после Q&A даже не остался на раздачу автографов, совместных снимков, обьятий, поцелуев и пр.
Q&A были минут 10-15, ничего нового сказано не было.
В зале было темно и вряд ли у кого-то будут качественные снимки.
В общем, как-то все грустно.

Ах, да: Билли был в джинсовой куртке и бежевом замшевом пиджаке поверх нее.

Говорят, что он был слегка охрипший и впечатление у народа было такое, что он при температуре. Я уж не знаю, на основании чего они сделали такие выводы. Может, в качестве самоутешения на предмет того, почему он не остался на раздачу слонов.

Мне кажется, что он не специально воздерживается от высказываний, а просто он искренен, он не будет повторять чье-то мнение, а так так сам по себе очень аполитичный, погруженный в себя и в искусство человек (по-моему), то над такими серьезными вопросами как война до сих пор и не задумывался, а ведь, чтобы составить свое мнение, надо не только задумываться, но и интересоваться фактами. С другой стороны, если бы его смущало, что Доминик в своих природозащитных и антивоенных высказываниях приплетает и его, то он бы его уже давно поправил.

Я тоже cчитаю, что Билли не может об этом не думать вообще. Кто об этом в наше время не думает?
Кстати, я что-то не могу припомнить, чтобы в своих пацифистcких тирадах Дом упоминал Билли. С деревьями - да, но защита окружающей среды не может вызвать никаких кривотолков и осложнений в карьере. С политикой сложнее. Мне кажется, Билли просто старше, мудрее и осторожнее. Кроме того, конкретно к войне в Ираке не все пацифистcки настроенные люди относятся однозначно.

А, собственно, о чем это мы? Цитата ведь говорит сама за себя. Билли совершенно прав. Можно подумать, кто-то знает, как обойтись без войн и насилия, кроме как, по предложению Вигго, собрать в кучу всех политиков и сбросить их с самолета в джунгли Амазонки.
Протестовать - оно, конечно, проще. Но Доминика (и Вигго с ним же) я все равно очень уважаю за смелость и безбашенность.

Отзыв Человека, Bидевшего "Monsignor Renard". Он мне так понравился (отзыв), что я его даже перевела зачем-то.

"Без спойлеров: признаться, на первой серии я все время рассматривала Дома, повизгивая: "Ой, вот он! Какой молоденький! Какой хорошенький! Какие ушки!"
Ко второй серии меня по-настоящему затянул прекрасный сюжет и великолепная игра всех актеров, но когда появлялся Дом, я все еще хихикала: "Kакие смешные ботинки! И прекрати ты, наконец, причесываться!"
А на третьей серии я уже не смеялась, а сидела неподвижно, уцепившись в натянутый до подбородка плед.
Это все, что я скажу. И еще то, что это прекрасно сделанный фильм, и я сейчас плачу, печатая это".

Еще один отчет о визите Билли. Подробный, со спойлерами "Снайпера" и ответами Билли на вопросы.

"The show was to start at 7:30 pm. It's a small movie theatre in an odd location - near several light industrial companies, rather than in a shopping district. It was a bit cold, but we lasted fairly well.
At 7:30, Billy came in from the side door (exit) of the theatre, with (a publicist for the Scottish Shorts, I assume). He was dressed in a black shirt, with dark blue jeans, a jean jacket and his leather jacket over it. The crowd (probably made up of about half fans) went crazy, of course, but stayed in their seats and were well-behaved. He did a quick introduction, which, of course, I don't remember, and on to the shorts.

Sniper 470 was first. To be honest, I was worried about the reaction, being afraid that some would laugh at the more "uncomfortable scenes", or talk throughout the movie, but the audience was great. There was some laughter at the toilet scene, and some uncomfortable sounds during the "virtual sex" scene, but otherwise, quiet and appreciative. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this on film on the large screen. For those of you who haven't seen it, it's an excellent 25 minute film that takes place in the future, about a gunner on an asteroid whose job is to shoot and destroy enemy ships passing through the asteroid belt. It focuses on the loneliness and isolation of his situation, the extreme lack of human contact, and the terror he has to face as a sitting target, and the terrible reality of killing. Very timely, and an excellent showcase for acting without the use of dialogue (and very little monologue). Much applause from the audience.

Q&A: Billy came in again, this time without the leather jacket. They only had 15 minutes, so he only took a few questions. He was asked about New Zealand and said he'd be there in May and June doing shooting. He was asked about his tattoo, and he gave the same answer as at Trent U - he explained what it was and where he got it - his ankle - without showing it, and commented that, in retrospect, it wasn't the smartest decision he made, since when they did it, he still had two weeks of acting in hobbit feet left, and glue over a raw wound is not a pleasant experience!

He was asked about the screenplay with Dom, and of course he teased and said how TERRIBLE Dom was to work with in writing it, it was just TORTURE, but the script was so good that it was worth it. Was asked about The Ballad of Crazy Paola (the gentleman acting as his publicist, or publicist for the Scottish Shorts mangled the name, so I guess he's not familiar with Billy's stage work - *g*) by a girl who's doing a scene from it (Scene 4) in acting class. He noted that the playwright wanted to call the scenes "Round 1", "Round 2", etc. because it's really a fight between two people, and that that scene should be played as one where the woman has the upper hand, because in that scene she knows more about the person connecting them (who is her dead lover and his dead brother). Billy then left; unfortunately, he was unable to stay and give autographs and had to keep his appearance at the end of the show short.

Again, a wonderful experience, a funny, thoughtful and gracious man. Thank you, Billy Boyd. "
